Peace in Pandemic

COVID-19 has flipped the world upside down in a matter of weeks. This is an unprecedented time. Amidst all the chaos, let us continue to rest in the peace we have in Abba. The unknown doesn’t have to be scary because He is in the unknown. In chapter four of the gospel of Mark, Jesus declares peace over troubled waters:

“And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (Mark 4:37-41, ESV).

Jesus slept through a storm! He knew that there was nothing to fear, but the disciples with Him saw a storm and forgot all that they knew about Peace. COVID-19 is a storm that has created an atmosphere of fear, worry, and anxiety across the world. Will we allow the fear of this storm to govern our lives and families? Or, will we look fear in the eye and declare Peace over it? The Church must choose its response.

As of March 16, Walking Street along with other bars and businesses in Angeles City, Philippines have been closed down until further notice. The women in the bars are not being exploited, however this also means that they no longer have an income to feed their children and families. The Girls Getaway vacation that Wipe Every Tear hosts for women in the bars, which is the best way to build trust with them, was also cancelled.

It is easy to look at these scenarios and feel an overwhelming sense of despair. The world would understand if that was the response given. But, now more than ever, it is vital that the world knows the hope that is in Christ. Abba’s peace surpasses all understanding. There is nothing to fear, not even fear itself. This time of solitude and stillness will usher in the revival we have been praying for! The fields are ripe for the billion-soul harvest! Yes, Abba! We pray that the world embraces the Prince of Peace during this time of uncertainty. We will indeed see His goodness in the land of the living (Psalm 27:13). Oh, heaven come!
